Your guide for travelling to Zambia and Victoria Falls
1. What is the best time to visit Victoria Falls and Southern Zambia?
The "best" time depends on what you want to experience:
High Water (March to May): This is when the Falls are at their most thunderous. Expect heavy mist and a powerful spray (you will get wet!).
Dry Season (June to October): Ideal for general safari in nearby parks like Mosi-oa-Tunya or Kafue. The weather is clear, and as the water level drops, the geological formations of the gorge become more visible.
Low Water (October to December): The Zambian side can become quite dry, but this is the only time the famous Devil’s Pool is usually accessible.
Practical Tip: For white-water rafting, the "low water" season (August to December) offers the most world-class rapids.
2. How do I get to the Victoria Falls region?
The primary gateway is Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) in Livingstone.
Flights: There are regular direct flights from Lusaka and Johannesburg via Proflight and other regional carriers.
Transfers: Upon arrival, we provide seamless road transfers to our lodges, most of which are a 20–45 minute drive from the airport.
Regional Access: If you are coming from the Lower Zambezi or Kafue, charter flights are available directly into Livingstone, allowing you to skip long road journeys and enjoy a bird's-eye view of the Zambezi River.
3. Do I need a visa and what about health requirements?
Visas: Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival. If you plan to visit both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of the Falls, we highly recommend the KAZA UniVisa ($50), which allows multiple crossings between the two countries and day trips to Botswana.
Health: Southern Zambia is a malaria-risk area. We advise taking anti-malaria medication and using insect repellent.
Entry Requirements: Always travel with a passport valid for at least 6 months, a return ticket, and proof of your accommodation
4. What wildlife can I expect to see near Victoria Falls?
While the Falls are the main attraction, the surrounding Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and nearby Zambezi riverfront offer excellent sightings:
The Classics: Frequent sightings of elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and zebras.
Rhino: Mosi-oa-Tunya is one of the few places in Zambia where you can track white rhinos on foot with specialized scouts.
River Life: Huge pods of hippos and large crocodiles are common along the Zambezi.
Birding: The riverine vegetation is a haven for birdwatchers, featuring the African Finfoot, Schalow’s Turaco, and various kingfishers
5. What types of activities are offered and how active are they?
The Victoria Falls area is the "Adventure Capital" of Africa, offering a mix of relaxation and adrenaline:
Water-Based: Sunset river cruises, canoeing on the upper Zambezi, and white-water rafting.
Land-Based: Guided tours of the Falls, rhino trekking on foot, and game drives.
Aerial: Microlight or helicopter "Flight of Angels" over the Falls.
Active Level: Most activities are low to medium impact, but the hike down to the "Boiling Pot" or white-water rafting requires a reasonable level of fitness.
7. What is the cost of a trip to Victoria Falls and how to budget?
Park Fees: Entrance to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park (Zambian side) is currently $20 per person for international visitors.
Activities: Budget separately for "bucket list" items like helicopter flights or rafting, which are typically priced in USD.
Lodging: Luxury riverfront lodges usually start around US$500 per person per night, including meals and most standard activities
8. How many days should I stay and can I combine it with other parks?
Duration: 3–4 nights is usually perfect to experience the Falls and a few river activities.
Combinations: Victoria Falls is the perfect "bookend" to a Zambian safari. It is easily combined with Kafue National Park (a short flight or drive to Nanzhila) or the Lower Zambezi.

9. Is there mobile phone and internet coverage in the Livingstone / Vic Falls area?
Unlike the remote northern valleys, Livingstone and the Victoria Falls area have good mobile network coverage and 4G signal. Most of our lodges offer high-speed satellite internet (Starlink) in the main guest areas and often in the rooms, making it easier to stay connected.
10. What currency is used and are credit cards accepted?
Currency: The Zambian Kwacha (ZMW) is the official currency for local shops and markets. However, USD is widely used and accepted for lodge bills and activity bookings.
Payments: Credit cards are widely accepted in Livingstone hotels and larger tour operators (note: some may apply a small transaction fee).
Cash: It is always useful to carry some USD cash (small denominations) for tipping and Zambian Kwacha for local purchases.
11. What is the climate like in Southern Zambia?
Winter (May to August): Mild, sunny days but cold nights. You will need a warm jacket for early morning boat trips or game drives.
Suicide Month (October): This is the hottest time of year, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F).
Rainy Season (November to April): Tropical humidity and spectacular afternoon thunderstorms. The landscape becomes lush and green, though some dirt roads can become challenging.
